Case Study 1 - Therapeutic Communities Journal

I am responsible for proofreading and typesetting this quarterly journal, which includes checking grammatical detail and layout. The Therapeutic Communities Journal cover

Following advice from the printers where it is produced, I use a template in MS Word for the page size and I have developed a style sheet in order to be consistent throughout. The contributory papers are submitted from all over the world and are peer-reviewed before they reach me, so a basic language check has already been carried out. I always check the papers thoroughly when they reach me, before typesetting, to ensure they follow a consistent pattern and reach the required standard of the journal. Occasionally, there are tables to re-set (due mostly to reduction in font size), and figures or pictures to insert.

Each lead author receives a proof once the paper has been typeset and any anomalies are resolved quickly. Some queries need to be checked with the two editors responsible for each issue.

Once the whole issue has been compiled, the editors give it a final check before I print out a hard copy, which I read once more; there are invariably errors that have been missed on screen and need to be corrected. Once I am satisfied, I take the hard copy and a disc containing a Word document and a pdf to the printers who produce a proof, which I read through carefully: it is amazing how many more errors can be picked up by reading through a densely-printed copy. After marking up the final corrections for the designer at the printers, another proof is produced. Once I sign this off, the printers produce the number of copies required for that particular print run and deliver them to our distribution department.
